James Benn
A Perfectly Peculiar Jazz Cabaret
Beloved Indianapolis performer James Benn returns to The District Theatre with a brand-new cabaret that is soulful, playful, and deeply human. A longtime Mass Ave resident and audience favorite, James brings his signature warmth, mischief, and stunning voice back to the stage—this time in the intimate Brian Payne Theatre.
Following acclaimed appearances in Back in Business and In the Life: Songs of Gay Harlem, James kicks off the new year with A Perfectly Peculiar Jazz Cabaret, joined by the extraordinary pianist and music director Brent E. Marty and dazzling us on upright bass will be rising jazz artist, Jacob Smith. He is currently serving as Professor of Jazz Bass at the University of Indianapolis. Together, they reimagine jazz standards, show tunes, and unexpected gems—adding their own unmistakable flair to songs that celebrate resilience, joy, and connection.
RECOMMENDED AGE 16+. - No children under age of 6 permitted in theatres.
With live music, candid storytelling, and a generous dose of humor, James invites audiences into an evening that feels both personal and communal. It’s a cabaret for anyone who loves great music, a good story, and the kind of performance that reminds us why gathering together still matters—especially in uncertain times.
Come spend an evening with two master musicians putting their own special spin on the songs that feed the soul.
