Indiana Humanities has announced the selection of Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments as the 2022 One State / One Storystatewide read selection. Through Nezhukumatathil’s stories, engaging speakers, a tour of the Smithsonian’s Water/Ways exhibit, Campfires treks, a film series, a podcast and more, we'll explore how we shape the environment and how the environment shapes us.

In World of Wonders, award-winning poet Nezhukumatathil explores the wonders of the natural world in 28 short essays beautifully illustrated by Fumi Nakamura. As a child, Nezhukumatathil called many places home: the grounds of a Kansas mental institution, where her Filipina mother was a doctor; the open skies and tall mountains of Arizona, where she hiked with her Indian father; and the chillier climes of western New York and Ohio. But no matter where she was transplanted—no matter how awkward the fit or forbidding the landscape—she was able to turn to our world’s fierce and funny creatures for guidance.
