Part of the 2026-2027 Spotlight Season Nearly a century after it last graced the stage, Winning Ways returns. Written in 1931 by Helen Staunton (pen name of Sybil Le Brocquy) and unseen since its Abbey Theatre premiere, this three-act comedy follows the Kearney family of Dublin's suburbs: Peter, a man more interested in his business and his bets than his children's ambitions; his wife Kate, drawn to spiritualism and desperate to keep up appearances; and their grown children Gwen and Kevin, each chasing their own kind of trouble. When Kate hosts a séance with the medium Mr. Vivian Drew, who communes hilariously with the spirits of Napoleon and Julius Caesar, the evening spirals toward exposure, scandal, and a winning bet on a horse named White Flower that saves the family from ruin. 1931 critics called it "full of witty lines," with "humours easy and unforced" and dialogue "humourously satirical." Almost a century later, The Morrigan Theatre Co brings this rediscovered comedy and its underlying critique of a woman's place in a newly independent Ireland back to the stage.
