A trio of artists offer interpretations inspired by the natural world. During the pandemic, nature became a respite and sanctuary for healing. In turn, it flourished as our modern lives paused. Our air quality improved, animal and plant species rebounded, and we reconnected with nature in the way that has been inspiring artists and philosophers for centuries.
Curiosity about our environment and its inhabitants are the common thread tying together the artwork of M.Rees, Emily Caito, and Bekka Sage, whose intimate interpretations of the natural world will be featured in the April 1 First Friday art show, “Polyphony,” at Indiana Landmarks Center.
The woodblocks of M.Rees illustrate his appreciation and wonder for the natural world and small town America. The bronze castings of Emily Caito combine nature and geometry to create a sense of gesture and structure. The mixed media paintings of Bekka Sage merge textures, shapes, and recycled materials with hopes of connecting with the wild.
The evening will include a wood block print demonstration by M.Rees.
Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available at the First Friday reception on April 1, 6-9 p.m. Guests can also tour Indiana Landmarks Center at 1201 Central Avenue in Indianapolis. Built as a Methodist church in the nineteenth century, the restored and adapted structure holds theaters and a reception hall in addition to the gallery and Indiana Landmarks’ headquarters. Free admission. Masks required for all guests except when eating or drinking in the gallery.
