“A powerful story. A necessary conversation. A transformative theatrical experience.”
Inspired by real events of Louisiana Jena Six, Blood at the Root is a gripping and emotionally charged drama by acclaimed playwright Dominique Morisseau that explores the complexities of race, identity, justice, and the fragile line between adolescence and adulthood. Set in a high school classroom after a racially charged incident, the play follows a group of Black students as they confront trauma, prejudice, and the systems that shape their futures.
Told through a bold and lyrical theatrical style, Blood at the Root asks urgent questions about how young people are seen, disciplined, protected, and ultimately prepared for the world they must inherit. It is a story about resilience, community, accountability, and the power of young voices to speak truth in moments of crisis.
This production continues IBTC’s commitment to uplifting Black stories that challenge, heal, and inspire — creating space for dialogue, reflection, and transformation.
