If you love to read, or you have an interest in Black history, the power of a woman’s voice or how racial prejudice can unfairly define a person’s identity, register to attend Communiversity during the fall 2022 semester.

Communiversity is a free, online, book-club-style course that is open to everyone — alumni, current students and community members alike. The course takes place throughout the semester and includes lectures and online discussions about the course’s book of focus — for this semester, the 1892 novel Iola Leroy or, Shadows Uplifted by Frances E.W. Harper.

Iola Leroy is one of the first novels published by a Black, female author. Harper’s story of Iola Leroy, the main protagonist, is rich in discussion of social issues that are as relevant today as they were before the turn of the 20th century: racism, community, identity, the power of a woman’s voice, social responsibility, alleged white supremacy and more. The novel inspired future Black writers, including journalist Ida B. Wells — who assumed the pen name Iola — and Zora Neale Hurston.

The course is held completely online (although, if desired, students can attend most lectures in person), and with manageable weekly readings and online discussions, the course is designed to fit into busy schedules.
