Indiana Humanities, the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the National Humanities Alliance welcome you to a conversation about the intersection of humanities, philanthropy, and equity through the lens of the life of Madam C.J. Walker. This program, known as the Capps Lecture, is the keynote of the National Humanities Conference, held this year in Indianapolis from Oct. 25-29.

In this special INconversation, A’Lelia Bundles, the great-great-granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker, and Dr. Tyrone McKinley Freeman, whose work has explored the legacy of Madam Walker’s philanthropy, will share insights into the life of this remarkable woman. Madam Walker was an entrepreneur, philanthropist and activist who built a hair-care empire in Indianapolis. Through their scholarship and storytelling, Bundles and McKinley Freeman have revealed much about the life of Madam Walker, and what we can learn about practices of philanthropy and equity today. The talk will take place in the historic Madam Walker Legacy Center, a theatre that was once the heart of Indiana Avenue, Indianapolis’s Black business district.
