Details

Lucy Higgs Nichols was a mother and Civil War nurse who escaped enslavement in Tennessee, joined the Indiana 23rd Regiment, and eventually settled in New Albany, Indiana. Revered by fellow veterans, she gained recognition from influential politicians, the national press, the Grand Army of the Republic, and even Congress as she fought to secure the Nurse’s pension she deserved. Join scholar and professor Eileen Yanoviak for a presentation and discussion on her new book, "The Tenacious Nurse Nichols: An Unsung African American Civil War Hero."
