Explore the legacy of slavery through Black art in a landmark Herron Galleries exhibition this fall.

Through contemporary African American art, "Past is Present: Black Artists Respond to the Complicated Histories of Slavery" explores the legacy of slavery in Indiana and beyond. The exhibition includes contributions from Indianapolis-based and nationally renowned artists, displayed in dialogue alongside historical objects and documents. Paintings, sculpture, prints, digital projections, textile art, and several mixed media works will be displayed.

"Past is Present" is curated by Jonathan Michael Square, Ph.D., assistant professor of Black visual culture at Parsons School of Design. It will be on view in the Herron Galleries at Eskenazi Hall, 735 W. New York St., from Sept. 28, 2022, through Jan. 14, 2023.

TALK & OPENING RECEPTION

On Sept. 28, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., featured artist Sonya Clark will deliver a talk. The event will be followed by an opening reception. Support for Clark’s talk is provided by ESL-Spectrum in Indianapolis.
