Tulips planted to beautify Downtown and remind people to complete the 2020 Census

In conjunction with Count Me INdy, Marion County’s Complete Count Campaign for the 2020 Census, Downtown Indy, Inc. was gifted 1,000 yellow tulip bulbs to be planted in a highly visible area in the city.

Downtown Indy, Inc. is taking part in this initiative to “plant a brighter future for Indianapolis,” with the idea being that the bulbs planted this fall will bloom next spring as a reminder for everyone in Marion County to be counted in the 2020 Census. All 1,000 tulips will be planted Monday in the Legacy Garden by Circle Centre/Simon employees.

For every person not counted in the 2020 Census, Marion County misses out on $20,000-$30,000 in federal funding that would otherwise come into our community over the next 10 years. This money goes towards programs that support education, housing, transportation, healthcare, emergency disaster relief and other services that contribute to the health, happiness and vitality of Indianapolis. Decisions about Indianapolis’ future – and the dollars for it – come down to counting everyone in the 2020 Census.

WHEN:
Tulips were planted Monday, Nov. 4

WHERE:
Southwest corner of Washington and Meridian streets – Legacy Garden in front of Circle Centre Mall

WHO:
Engledow Group, Downtown Indy, Inc. and Circle Centre/Simon employees

FYI:
Count Me INdy is dedicated to promoting the census to all residents and ensuring that they know that – whoever they are and wherever they’re from – they count in the 2020 Census. The campaign is headed by co-chairs Miriam Acevedo Davis of La Plaza, Inc. and Tony Mason of the Indianapolis Urban League, led by a coalition of community partners serving on the Complete Count Committee, and supported by the staff of the City of Indianapolis’ Department of Metropolitan Development. www.countmeindy.com
